The excellence initiative has significantly changed the research and teaching landscape in Germany. Two years after the press coverage following the approval of the third round in 2012, we would like to take the opportunity to report on the status of the objectives of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory and the proposals selected as approaches to given problems.

The first annual conference of the Cluster of Excellence »Image Knowledge Gestaltung« of the Humboldt University of Berlin is intended to provide insight into the research activities of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory.

After an introduction by the vice president of research at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Peter A. Frensch, who is also conducting research within the Cluster of Excellence as a psychologist, the conference will open with some fundamental considerations on image knowledge. The new image technologies in the sciences are the starting point for inquiries that no longer concern the epistemic definitions of what an image is, but rather seek to understand the various knowledge processes and practices in which images and image-assisted methods play an elementary role. In the first part, an example of how methods are transferred within the cluster will be presented and the active formative role of images in the research process will be demonstrated.

With an eye on the digital revolution and the radical change in materials, the Interdisciplinary Laboratory is rethinking knowledge structures in their entirety. The Cluster of Excellence brings knowledge together from over 25 disciplines in the humanities, natural sciences and Gestaltung. In the second part, the interdisciplinary collaboration will be introduced as a process and research project of the cluster and the disciplinary materialisation of knowledge in its research will be presented.

Gestaltung as an integrative act becomes a key process in joining together diverse forms of knowledge within the Cluster of Excellence. For this reason, architecture and design are actively involved in the basic research in the Interdisciplinary Laboratory. In the third part, the programmatic understanding of Gestaltung as a synthesis will be presented. Among others, concrete interdisciplinary design projects will be presented and the »transition to Gestaltung« in the sciences will be discussed.

You can register for the conference by email at bildwissengestaltung@hu-berlin.de .
The conference will be held in german. Please inform us, if you would like to use our english translation service at the conference.
