Marietta Kesting studied Visual Arts at Bennington College, Vermont (USA) and Cultural Theory and History and Media Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Between 2008 and 2011, she was an assistant-in-training at the Institut für Zeitgeschichte (Institute for Contemporary History) at the University of Vienna. Subsequently, she was a scholarship holder of the DFG (German Research Foundation)-funded Ph.D. Research Group »Gender as a Category of Knowledge«. Between 2011 and 2013, she undertook several research trips to the Wits University in Johannesburg (South Africa). The working title of her Ph.D. project is »Documentary Strategies - Affect and Politics.  Framing migration, racism and gender in South African post-apartheid media«.

Marietta Kesting was a research assistant in the base project »Gender & Gestaltung« with a focus on border studies and visual culture studies.
